Addressing Educational Inequality & teacher retention

Group 146

Our neighborhoods are dramatically different than they were 60 years ago. Brown v. Board of Education (1954) & housing segregation caused neighborhoods largely polarized by race & class. This has resulted in unequal educational opportunities for students who belong to these communities. Teacher shortages and uncertified teachers disproportionately impact America’s most underprivileged students with “high-minority schools experiencing 7x the turnover of low-minority schools.”

With national data showing that a teacher turnover is equivalent to losing half an academic year, we know this must end. We place a system of support alongside our schools to make sure our school staff and students experience the love and backing of a wide community committed to giving kids a strong foundation.

HELPS CREATES STUDENT STABILITY & SAFETY

Teacher turnover poses a significant challenge in urban schools nationwide, impacting students who lose valuable mentors during their formative years. The social cost is immeasurable, as the influence of a dedicated teacher is invaluable. Financially, each teacher departure incurs costs ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 for training and onboarding. To address this issue, our primary focus is on teacher retention, aiming to provide love, support, and a strong community to make it compelling for educators to stay, ultimately benefiting our students.

Support Families

WITH SAFE ADULT & STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS

Building lasting relationships with schools and students integrates us into the extended family fabric, offering a genuine approach to breaking cycles. By meeting people where they are, we enable active participation in the success of their students. Many economically challenged parents face shame, hindering engagement and stripping them of the dignity of meeting basic needs. For instance, juggling multiple part-time jobs may fulfill necessities but keeps parents away from home. Genuine flourishing involves connected families actively shaping generational cycles into pathways of hope.

Transform Communities

THROUGH TRANSFORMED FAMILIES

Long-term change is long, hard work. But it’s exactly what’s needed and what our culture is hungry for it. Relief is a wonderful thing; it can meet big needs in scary moments. But we don’t see it changing situations for the long-haul. Development is about transformation. It’s about community & connection. It’s about loving & caring for your neighbor & not believing the lie that we need to fear one another. Let’s go and neighbor well.
